PTSD Awareness Month: Healing Through EMDR Therapy
June is PTSD Awareness Month, a time to honor the strength of those living with trauma and to shed light on treatments that can truly help. One of the most effective tools in trauma recovery is EMDR therapy, and it’s available right here at For All Seasons.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, a therapy designed to help people heal from traumatic experiences, whether recent or long past. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn’t require clients to relive every detail of their trauma. Instead, it uses gentle techniques like eye movements, tapping, or sounds to help the brain reprocess painful memories.
“Trauma can get ‘stuck’ in the brain, leading to anxiety, flashbacks, or nightmares,” explains Beth Anne Dorman, CEO of For All Seasons. “EMDR helps ‘unstick’ those memories so they lose their emotional charge and become more manageable.”
Who Can EMDR Help?
EMDR can be life-changing for people impacted by:
- Abuse or neglect
- Accidents or natural disasters
- Bullying or loss
- Military service or violence
Whether the trauma happened decades ago or just last year, EMDR may offer a path to relief.
What to Expect in a Session
EMDR follows a structured, step-by-step process. Clients work with a trained therapist to recall distressing memories while engaging both sides of the brain through specific movements or sounds. As the memory is reprocessed, the emotions tied to it often begin to fade.
Importantly, clients don’t need to share every detail of what happened, making EMDR a safe and approachable option for many.
Healing is Within Reach
